Help Afghanistan
Please Help Rebuild Afghanistan
I can only hope that visitors to my website and readers of Words in the Dust will be inspired to want to do more to help the children in Afghanistan. To that end, I would like to recommend helping Women for Afghan Women, an organization working to secure education and human rights for women and children in Afghanistan. I highly encourage everyone to consider donating to this worthy cause. Afghanistan faces many challenges, but through the efforts of concerned and caring people around the world, and with the dedication and indomitable courage of Afghans like Zulaikha, a new Afghanistan will rise up from war to a peaceful and prosperous future.
Now is an especially critical time for Women for Afghan Women and for the movement toward peace in Afghanistan. As United States and coalition military forces have reduced their presence in the country, the Taliban has caused terrible setbacks in reconstruction, democracy, justice, and basic human rights, for all the people of Afghanistan and especially for women and girls.
Women for Afghan Women has been a leader in the effort to bring hope to women and girls in Afghanistan for many years, and they’ve done amazing work. The situation in Afghanistan is troubling, but progress has been made and will continue to be made as long as dedicated and caring people keep working toward a better tomorrow.

My Visit with WAW
In May 2011 I had the opportunity to visit the New York headquarters of Women for Afghan Women. There, my editor Cheryl Klein and I had the chance to talk to people involved in the girls empowerment program who had read Words in the Dust. Then we had a fantastic Afghan meal made by Afghan-American women who are part of the Women for Afghan Women community in New York. It was a great day, and I remain in awe of all the great work Women for Afghan Women does.
Here are some photos from that day.
